Professional Learning

Breathing Education for Allied Health Professionals

Dr Katherine Putnam provides professional learning for clinicians interested in the role of breathing in movement, performance, and nervous system regulation. Her work draws on respiratory physiology, breathing mechanics and clinical breathing retraining to translate research into practical assessment and intervention strategies.

These workshops are designed for practitioners who want a deeper understanding of how breathing function influences physical capacity, stability, recovery and symptom presentation in both clinical and performance settings. Sessions emphasise physiology, biomechanics and clinical application, providing practitioners with frameworks they can integrate into assessment and rehabilitation.

Who These Workshops Are For

Professional learning sessions are relevant for practitioners working in rehabilitation, performance and clinical health settings, including:

Continuing Professional Learning Workshops

For clinics, professional groups, and organisations

These workshops introduce clinicians to the physiology and mechanics of breathing and their relevance to movement, rehabilitation, and performance. Sessions combine scientific explanation with practical discussion of assessment approaches and clinical application. Participants develop a clearer understanding of how breathing patterns may influence stability, breathlessness, recovery and physical capacity. Workshops can be delivered on-site for clinics and professional teams, or off-site as hosted professional learning events.

Participants will gain:

Specialist Masterclasses

Education sessions for athletes, runners and active individuals of all ages

Masterclasses provide clients with a deeper understanding of how breathing influences physical capacity, efficiency and recovery. These sessions explore topics such as breathing mechanics, breathlessness, carbon dioxide tolerance and the role of breathing in endurance and stability. The aim is to help your clients better understand their own breathing patterns and how they may influence training, recovery, and performance. Workshops are delivered on-site and can be run it as a ticketed member event (revenue share), or a hosted workshop with a fixed presenter fee.

Participants will gain:

Action Research Coaching for Clinicians

Ongoing professional learning experience for practitioners

Action research coaching supports clinicians who wish to explore the role of breathing within their own practice over time. Action research is a structured approach where practitioners systematically test and reflect on new strategies in real-world settings, learning through observation, evidence-informed interventions, and adaptation. In this small-group professional learning format, participants apply breathing assessment and retraining concepts with appropriate clients while reflecting on clinical observations and outcomes. The program unfolds over three small-group sessions across several months:

Learning: acquire core concepts and assessment strategies.
Planning: design tailored interventions for your clients.
Reflection: evaluate outcomes, refine approaches, and integrate insights into practice.

This unique professional learning opportunity supports context-specific evolution of clinical practice.
